Small Business Security Part 2 – Layered Malware Defense

Layered Malware Protection ImageIn part 2 of our Small Business Security series, we are going to discuss the different types of layered malware defense. The different areas of anti malware that we will discuss include web security solutions, end-point security solutions and email security solutions.

Web Security

A firewall alone will not protect your business 100% from security issues, but a good one will help reduce the threat. The major vendors in this area include Cisco, CheckPoint, Watchguard, Fortinet and SonicWALL. When looking at deploying a firewall, you want to make sure it is a UTM (Unified Threat Management) appliance that also does network level antivirus, intrusion prevention and web filtering. For a landscape of the current UTM appliances, please see the following review of the leading UTM’s from David Strom with InfoWorld:

Endpoint Security

For the protection of your servers, workstations and mobile devices, you want to make sure you have a robust security suite solution that will not be a resource hog and make you less efficient. You want to make sure the suite you go with does anti-virus, anti-spyware, personal firewall and host-based Intrusion Prevention Services. This also includes potential management of mobile devices as well.

Email Security

Another layer that you should look at is protecting your email from malware. These solutions will provide anti-spam, anti-phishing, email anti-virus and email encryption protection. Here is an article from SC Magazine that provides reviews to some of these solutions:
